Hours after we published our lead story on the Government Spokesman being named in a financial scandal, latest reports reaching us say Ebrima G Sankareh has returned the two thousand and five hundred dollars ($2,500) that was given to him last year by his wife Binta Gaye, for him, to deposit the money into a Banjul Bank account, Freedom Newspaper can reveal. The funds belong to Sankareh’s in-law. His in-law lives in Raleigh, North Carolina.
“I heard your man has repaid the money you wrote about in your article. He has returned the money. I was told that he deposited the money after your publication. He settled the money this past Thursday,” said a source.
According to sources, a furious Sankareh, was concerned about the source, who had leaked the story to the Freedom Newspaper. His wife and his Raleigh lady in-law have reportedly denied speaking to the Freedom Newspaper, one source has intimated.
“He returned the money a day, or so after your publication. Your publication has helped a lot,” said our source.
STORY BACKGROUND
The Spokesperson of The Gambian government Ebrima G Sankareh has been named in a financial scandal. The financial transaction happened in 2019. The story goes like this: While Sankareh was on a visit to the US last year, he was reportedly given two thousand and five hundred dollars ($2,500) by his wife Binta Gaye to deposit the money into a bank account in The Gambia. The money in question belongs to one of Sakareh’s inlaws. However, credible sources said Sankareh did not deposit the money as instructed by his wife.
Repeated attempts were made by his wife for Sankareh to deposit the money into the Banjul based bank account, but to no avail. A frustrated and disappointed Mrs. Gaye, even resorted to contacting Sankareh’s own mum, loved ones, and “friends” for him to deposit the money into the account or at least return it, but without success.
Sadly, Mrs. Gaye later learned that her husband had married a second wife called Mrs. Jammeh. She was infuriated by Sankareh’s move. She then started mounting pressure on Sanks to return the money, said sources.
A Gambian American citizen, who visited The Gambia, in the early part of 2020, was also delegated by Mrs. Gaye to help her call Sankareh and ask him about the whereabouts of the $2,500 that was given to him to deposit it at the bank.
“As soon as the US man telephoned Sankareh, Sanks, as he is fondly called, remarked: Did she also tells you about the money? The gentleman responded in the positive. The man named withheld then told Sankareh that he was delegated by his wife to make a follow up on the $2,500 that was given to him (Sankareh) to deposit it to the bank in The Gambia. Sankareh had promised to call the gentleman the following day, which he never did. He never calls back the guy. The gentleman had stayed in The Gambia for over one month without seeing or spoken to Sankareh since that first call,” said our sources.
The gentleman later returned to the US and reported to Sankareh’s wife about what he gathered. Sankareh never returned his call as promised. Though Sanks did confirmed to the gentleman about the existence of the $2,500 that was given to him for deposit.
“The last time I checked, he never deposited the money into the account. I was told that his wife is still making efforts to have the money recovered,” said sources.
