The Gambian soldier, who was accused of burglarizing The Gambia Armed Forces Defense Headquarters has been identified, the Freedom Newspaper can authoritatively report. The soldier’s name is Corporal Sarjo Conteh. Conteh is a military police officer. He is currently detained at the Fajara barracks. He is helping the military police in their investigations.
Conteh is widely known as FBI. He works at the Defense Headquarters as an MP. He was alleged to have entered the Defense Headquarters in the early hours of Wednesday morning and broke into one of the cupboards containing the force’s fuel coupons and stole fuel coupons worth three hundred and ninety thousand dalasis (D390,000). There were guards on duty when the incident happened. He later fled and boarded a taxi that was waiting for him around the mortuary in Banjul. He was chased by the guards, but he escaped.
The theft happened at the office of Major Cherno Jobe. Major Jobe’s job at GAF includes the issuance of fuel coupons to the force. Jobe shared office with Captain Musa K Sambou. Both Jobe and Sambou had keys to the said office. Jobe’s orderly Adama Mendy also has access to the office. Mendy was officer Arthur Gomez’s orderly before he was assigned to Major Cherno Jobe. Arthor is currently on a visit to China.
Our research also revealed that the GAF cleaner had a key to the said office. The cleaner’s key is usually hung somewhere at the door.
MP Corporal Sarjo Conteh got busted, when he allegedly tried to sell the stolen fuel coupons at GNPC. It has been gathered that fuel coupons allocated to GAF and other government institutions often land into the hands of gas station cashiers. For example, in every stolen fuel coupon worth D1,000 dalasis, the gas station cashier and the thief would reached a secret deal and the cashier would be in return paid D100 dalasis from every fuel coupon sold.
Conteh has reportedly implicated his colleagues while being interrogated by the military police. He is said to be from Sukuta.
It would be recalled that the Army Spokesman Major Lamin Sanyang, when earlier contacted for comment, he confirmed the incident to Freedom Radio Gambia. He said some soldiers had been arrested and were helping the military police in their investigations.
When asked whether the arrested soldiers were being held in connection with the alleged stolen fuel coupons, Sanyang replied in the affirmative. Though he said, he couldn’t comment further on the matter, saying that the investigations were ongoing.
