Dictator Jammeh’s former Attorney General and Minister of Justice Lamin Babanding Jobarteh has joined the main opposition United Democratic party (UDP) together with 25 National People’s Party supporters, the leader UDP Ousainou Darboe announced on Saturday at a Saruja meeting. “Lamin Babanding Jobarteh, welcome back to the UDP,” Darboe announced, making the appearance that Jobarteh was a UDP supporter while serving dictator Jammeh’s regime.
“We are also welcoming 25 NPP supporters, who have joined the UDP. You are welcome to the UDP,” Darboe added.
Lamin Jobarteh is a native of Bansang. Both him and Darboe hailed from the same region.
It would be recalled that Lamin Babanding Jobarteh was adversely mentioned at Gambia’s truth commission (TRRC) on torture related allegations. The former intelligence officer has been accused by multiple witnesses of supervising and participating in the torture of security detainees and Jammeh’s political opponents.
Per Ousainou Darboe’s today’s announcement, Jobarteh is a former UDP supporter. Jobarteh was Attorney General and Minister of Justice, when UDP officials and supporters were subjugated by Jammeh’s micromanaged Justice Ministry and Judiciary.
Jobarteh has been named in the illegal execution of the mile two nine inmates. Jungullars, who took part in the execution of the inmates said Jobarteh was present when the inmates were being killed.
With few days before the TRRC submits its report to President Barrow, Jobarteh has joined the UDP. The TRRC is headed by his Basang brother Dr. Lamin Sise. Sise is a close relative of the UDP leader Ousainou Darboe.
The opposition UDP has in recent weeks accused President of not politically fraternizing with Jammeh’s APRC party. This followed a political merger that was formed between Barrow’s NPP and Jammeh’s APRC party. They have accused Barrow of undermining the TRRC reform agenda that his own government has pioneered. They aren’t convinced that a Barrow government will implement the TRRC report.
Now the same UDP party is welcoming a former official of the Jammeh administration, who has been adversely mentioned at the TRRC on torture related accusations.
