The officer commanding the Brikama police station Superintendent Gass Sabally has been transferred to the police training school with immediate effect, sources close to the Brikama police have intimated. She is going to work under Superintendent Modou Lamin Sonko, the Commander of the police training school (PTS), sources further intimated. Superintendent Sabally’s abrupt transfer followed allegations that she had shared police information with the main opposition United Democratic Party (UDP). The information got to do with the arrest of one Saidou Jammeh, who was accused of “illegally” possessing a Gambian voters’ card. Jammeh was processed by the Giboro police about a week ago, held overnight, and released on bail.
Superintendent Sabally was alleged to have shared the text message exchanges she had with Pateh Jallow, the police Commissioner for the West Coast Region, with an official of the opposition UDP. A row later broke out between her and Jallow, with Jallow reporting her alleged misconduct to the police command in Banjul, sources close to the Brikama police told us.
In the aftermath of the Giboro police stop, which caused a firestorm between the two officers, Superintendent Sabally and her boss Commissioner Pateh Jallow, were summoned for a meeting at the police headquarters in Banjul this past Monday. The two officers were asked to submit written statements to explain what transpired.
In attendance at the disciplinary hearing was the Inspector General of Abdoulie Sanyang and other officers. Both officer Sabally and Jallow had narrated their side of the story before the police chief.
Upon evaluating the facts and evidence before him, the police chief was reported to have ruled that Superintendent Gass Sabally has been found culpable as alleged. She was transferred forthwith to the police training school (PTS) as a form of punishment for her alleged misconduct.
Gass Sabally’s replacement hasn’t been named yet. The OC position at the Brikama police station remains vacant as we file this report.
“She has been transferred with immediate effect. She has even apologized to Pateh for her gross misconduct. The IGP has decided to send her to the police training school. We are looking forward to receiving our new OC. For now, we do not have an OC here in Brikama,” said an insider at the Brikama police.
Meanwhile, the police command is said to be increasingly concerned about the volume of “secret information” regarding the police being passed to the Freedom Newspaper and the opposition. It is considering opening an investigation to trace the individuals behind the circulation of such information, sources said.
In another development, the second batch of police detectives, who were sent to Dakar to pursue the robbery case involving AIG Landing Bojang, are expected to arrive in Banjul today Friday. Details of their mission would be reported here in coming hours.
