The United Democratic Party has lost another strong supporter, Freedom Newspaper can report. Mansa Sumareh, President Barrow’s former chief driver, has defected to Barrow’s National People’s Party (NPP). Prior to his defection to the NPP, Sumareh had a fallout with Mr. Barrow in the wake of the Diplomatic Passport scandal. He was fired and charged along with others, after been accused of selling Gambia’s Diplomatic Passports.
Following his fallout with Barrow, Mr. Sumareh, returned to his old political party, the United Democratic Party, where he was accorded a huge welcome by the party’s membership.
On Friday, NPP’s Lamin Touray, interviewed Mr. Sumareh on his defection to the NPP. Flanked on the right by his first cousin Alhagie Saikou Barrow, a strong NPP supporter, Sumareh, said he thanked God that he has reconciled with President Barrow. That the past differences between with him and The Gambian leader has been finally resolved.
He has blamed “Satan” and bad people for being responsible of his strained relationship with President Barrow. He added that some of his close family members and relatives were the ones, who brokered the reconciliation between him and President Barrow. He has promised that the misunderstanding that happened between him and Barrow would never happen again.
“The family ties between President Barrow and my family would continue to grow from strength to strength. Some respected elders facilitated the reconciliation. I am very grateful. President Barrow and I had strong family ties,” he said.
According to Mr. Sumareh, President Barrow was equally pleased for the reconciliation.
“I feel good that we have reconciled. President told me that each time he sees my picture or heard statements being attributed to me, he was always in denial, that he was always surprised. He kept telling his people that this is not my Mansa, that his people were fooling him. He told me that he sometimes cries if he sees my picture. He has also blamed Satan for being responsible for our past differences. In the end, we embraced each other, we were all happy to reunite again,” he said.
“The President later called some of his Ministers to witness the reconciliation event: Hamat Bah, and Musa Drammeh. Henry Gomez was also present. The President was exceedingly happy. He told them that my Mansa is back, that we have reconciled,” he added.
Despite his reconciliation with President Barrow, Mansa Sumareh had a pending criminal charge before the courts. His fate is yet to be decided.
