The Senegalese Gendamerie officer, who resigned from the Ousman Sonko alleged rape case investigation, has said that he is not afraid to go to jail for the bold decision that he has taken to save his life and that of his family. Captain Oumar Toure made this statement in an interview with Pape Ale Nyang, a Senegalse journalist, cum political analyst.
“I rescued myself from Ousman Sonko’s case to save my life. I do not want to be killed. Since the leaked minutes of this investigation to the press, I have noticed people following me. I have been monitored. My communications are also monitored. I am a Gendamerie officer, if I am followed and monitored, I should be able to know. I do not know why they are following me,” Toure remarked.
Toure was the officer heading the investigations into Ousman Sonko’s alleged rape case. A female Salon worker has accused politician Ousman Sonko of raping her, a charge Sonko has categorically denied.
Toure’s probe was leaked to the press. He later discovered that he was being surveilled by unknown people. His phone communications also monitored.
Worried by the threats on his life, he said, he reported the matter to his superior. He asked for protection but was never accorded security protection.
Toure felt that the Macky Sall government hasn’t done well in managing the nationwide protest marches, which has led to the death of ten people. There was also massive destruction to property.
“I have seen people dying, peoples’ properties being destroyed. Instead of trying to find a lasting solution on this crisis, the Interior Minister is adding fuel to the fire. His statement wasn’t helpful at all. No one is talking to the protesters. They should talk to the protesters,” he said, while appealing to the protesters to end the protest.
“If you destroy businesses and people’s properties, it would cause hardship for this country. Remember that Makcy Sall would one day leave office. Do not destroy our country. I am begging you to stop the protest and go home,” he said.
Toure could be tried for abandoning his job. But he said, his life comes first before anything.
“I am ready to turn myself to the Gendamerie. I am not afraid to go to jail. This is a decision that I took on my own to save my life and that of my family,” he said.
“I heard them saying that I am being manipulated. That’s wrong. I am not that type of person. No one is using me. If I were that type of person, I would have granted interview to RFI, and other foreign media houses. My integrity remains in tack. I do not want money. I am content. I am ready to share the little I have with the people. This is my own personal decision. I took it on my own,” he added.
Mr. Toure has challenged Pape Ale Nyang to contact his colleagues to shed light on his reputation as a Gendamerie officer.
“You can ask my colleagues. They will tell you who I am. They won’t tell you anything bad or negative about me. The only thing that they would tell you is that he is a funny person. He always makes people to laugh,” he said.
Toure is not afraid of losing his job. He thinks that there is life after his service.
“Sadly, some people are telling me it is not safe to resign because I might lose my source of earning. Senegalese should quit that type of mindset. I am not better than those who lost their sons from this incident. I am not better than those who lost their properties from this incident,” he remarked.
Toure has heaped praises for the former Senegalese President Abdoulie Wade. He said Wade was a principled and honest leader.
“Abdoulie Wade is the only politician I respect among Senegalese politicians. He was true leader. I have so much respect for Wade,” he said.
Toure has denied sharing the details of his investigations with anyone. He said he has spoken to any politician while overseeing the Sonko case.
