The Chairman of the Brikama Area Council (BAC) Sheriffo Sonko, has informed the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) that the letter that was sent to them by the BAC Deputy Chairman Ismaila Jallow wasn’t authentic, Freedom Newspaper can report. This followed Jallow’s letter to the IEC, in which he informed the Commission about Sonko’s expulsion from the United Democratic Party (UDP). But Sonko said Jallow’s letter was forged, and it doesn’t reflect the official letter head of BAC. Jallow claimed that Sonko was expelled together with Bilal Faal, the Councillor for the Wellingara ward, and Momodou Bojang, the ward Councillor for Sanyang.

“I wish to attest that the letter used in the above correspondence is Not the official letterhead of the office of the Chairman and thus not authentic. I also wish to sincerely state that the author acted unilaterally without seeking the mandate or the consent of the Council (the decision making organ of the institution) prior to sending such correspondence,” Chairman Sonko told the IEC in a letter July 3rd, 2020.

“Please find attached the list of Councillors bearing their signatures and respective wards against unlawful attempts by the United Democratic Party to declare my seat vacant,” Sonko added.

Forging official document is crime under Gambian law. It ii s not clear if Chairman Sonko has reported the alleged falsification of the BAC letterhead  to the police. One could be jailed if convicted for forging an official document.
