While the Coronavirus pandemic is claiming thousands of lives across the globe, shattering global economies, sending millions of hotel workers unemployed, here in the impoverished West African nation of The Gambia, about 40 full-time staffers of the Senegambia Beach Hotel, are at the risk of losing their jobs, Freedom Newspaper can report. The staffers, some of whom, had over one-decade employment with the hotel, were invited for a meeting on Friday, where management had reportedly offered to send them on leave, pending further notice.

The Gambia has recorded 55 cases of COVID-19 cases, according to the Ministry of Health. Out of the 55 Coronavirus positive cases, 27 patients have recovered and two died.

The Senegambia staffers were told that they would be paid two months in lieu of notice, as the hotel’s guest arrival record has declined because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The meeting ended in a stalemate. The staff wouldn’t agree to the management’s proposal to pay them a two months’ notice.

The meeting has been rescheduled for a fortnight. Management is expected to finalize its decision in the upcoming meeting.
