“I resigned on personal grounds and, but I really don’t want to go into the details, but it is just, you know, I can’t do my job as expected. The environment is not conducive for me to perform. That is all I can say. It is not anything strange. It is just that I come from a culture of work and which is different from the culture that is in government,” said Alasan Senghore, the former Coordinator of Gambia’s COVID-19 response program. This was Senghore’s first public statement since his resignation on Monday. He spoke in a phone conversation with the Freedom Newspaper. He was contacted by Editor Pa Nderry M’Bai to shed light on his resignation, which he confirmed.
When asked whether his resignation had to do with him (Senghore) not being able to get along with the Health Ministry’s COVID-19 response program team, a relax and soft spoken Alasan Senghore remarked: “No, it is not about getting along, it is about a culture of an organization, the work culture that I have; and definitely I can’t perform; you know I have worked 25 years internationally delivering and if I cannot perform, you know, I think the best thing is to let somebody else do the job.”
Further quizzed: Is it that you resigned because you didn’t receive the necessary support you deserve from your colleagues? In response Senghore had this to say: “Well, let leave that for another time. I think like I said, it is about work culture. I am a person, who delivers and if I feel I cannot deliver for one reason or the other, I think it is best to get somebody, who can do it. You know, I have never worked for government and this was my first time, so probably it is a different thing altogether, so that was the best thing to do. There is nothing other than that to be quite honest.”
