While the former junta Vice Chairman Sanna Bairo Sabally, tells Gambia’s TRRC that he was the one, who facilitated the appointment of his cousin sister Fatoumatta Jallow Tambajang to serve as Health Minister back in July 22nd 1994, Ms. Tambajang told me in 2016, in an exclusive interview that she was forced by Jammeh to quit her UN job to work for the junta. She also told me that Sanna Sabally was totally opposed to Jammeh’s decision to have her on board the military regime at the time. She claimed that Sana Sabally even had to protest to Tambajang’s own mum to register his opposition to Ms. Tambajang’s move of accepting a ministerial appointment from Jammeh. I was also told by Ms. Tambajang in that interview that Jammeh even threatened the United Nations by purportedly saying that he would close the UN offices in Banjul if she (Ms. Tambajang) was not allowed by the UN head offices in New York to work with his administration.
According to Ms. Tambajang, Sanna Sabally allegedly told her that in a worst case scenario, he would rather prefer Jammeh, appointing her, as Gambia’s Ambassador to the United Nations than her accepting a ministerial position from the junta.
Sanna Sabally told the TRRC on Wednesday that it was through him that Fatoumatta Jallow Tambajang, Fafa Edrissa M’Bai, Amina Faal Sonko, and Memba Tambadou were brought into the former regime. M’Bai had served as Justice Minister, while Tambadou was appointed Information Minister.
Ms. Tambajang was appointed Health Minister. She was fired shortly after Sanna Sabally had fallen out with Jammeh.
