Members of the Gambian Armed Forces have been deployed to the Brikama police station and the PIU Base in Brikama, to reinforce the officers on the ground amid reports that some disgruntled community members of Faraba Banta are planning to march to the station to set it on fire, the Freedom Newspaper has been reliably informed. Army Chief of Defense Staff Major General Masaneh Kinteh, has issued an order for soldiers at the Yundum barracks to be deployed to Brikama overnight. Unless Kinteh’s order is rescinded, the Freedom Newspaper can authoritatively report that soldiers in Yundum have been ordered to “ fall in” and take part in the operations to reinforce the Brikama station and the PIU base in Brikama.
Earlier on Wednesday, the ECOMIG Commander, and his men visited Faraba, and had a meeting with the residents of the village. The regional force commander appealed to the villagers to keep the peace and stay away from violence. He also said some personnel of the ECOMIG force will be stationed in the village until further notice. He handed phone numbers to the community leaders to call his men for help in the event of an emergency.
The ECOMIG force commander made a remark at the meeting that there were some intelligence agents at the village, but he advised them to avoid provoking or harassing the villagers.
The mother of Gambia’s jailed former spy chief Yankuba Badjie hailed from Faraba. Many youngsters of the village were employed into the NIA during Badjie’s tenure as the head of the Agency.
According to a law enforcement source, the CDS’s order for reinforcement in Brikama, followed an intelligence report they received that some Faraba residents had threatened to march to Brikama to set the security installations in that town on fire. The wanted to avenge the murder of two residents of the village, who were allegedly killed by members of the PIU.
The government has since appointed Lawyer Emmanuel Joof to head a commission of Inquiry to probe into the shooting incident. Joof is a respected Gambian Humans Rights Lawyer.
