Gambia’s Foreign Minister and Leader of the United Democratic Party Ousainou Darboe came under attack later Tuesday evening in Faraba Banta, amid a hostile crowd, who chased the Minister out of the village. A visibly panic-stricken Darboe, was hurriedly escorted out of the village by good seminarians, who came to his rescue. Darboe visited Faraba, immediately after close of business on Tuesday, to express condolence to the families of the departed Faraba environmentalists Bakary Kujabi and Ismaila Bah. Kujabi and Bah were killed by the personnel of the police intervention unit (PIU) during Monday’s clashes between the residents of the village and the PIU officers.
Prior to Darboe’s arrival, Mai Fatty first visited the village. Mai met with the family of Ismaila Bah, where he was accorded a warn reception. He then proceeded to the family home of the late Bakary Kujabi. He was booed and chased by the residents at the Kujabi family home. Fatty had to leave the village to avoid being physically attacked. His vehicle was stoned at by the villagers.
For Foreign Minister Ousainou Darboe, he was warned not to visit the Kujabi family—given the hostile reception meted out to his former Cabinet colleague Mai Fatty. He was advised to handover the monetary gift he has for the bereaved families to the village elders and leave the village as soon as possible (ASAP).
While Darboe was preparing to leave, he was accosted by an angry mob—mainly youngsters. His attackers cursed him and called him names. At this point, some residents of the village provided protection for Darboe to board his awaiting official car. This never stopped the angry mob from stoning at Darboe’s vehicle. The passenger rear window and the back were smashed.
Faraba remains tense. Villagers have blamed the Barrow government for the death of their loved ones.
