Dodou Sannoh is a native of Korro-Julakunda. Korro-Julakunda is situated in Jimara, in the Upper River Region of The Gambia. It has a population of about 323 habitants. Mr. Sannoh is an old-time member of the United Democratic Party (UDP). He was among the UDP’s Youth Wing, under the leadership of the late Syngle Nyassi. Sannoh has no formal education. He grew up in Korro-Julakunda and spent most of his youthful life in Bakau. ” Dodou Sannoh was working under me, when I was part of the UDP Youth Wing. He is the one linked to the confusion going on in Jimara. I don’t think he has any formal education,” Saihou Mballow, a member of the opposition GDC told me, in a telephone conversation. Mr. Mballow will join us on air on Thursday to address Dodou Sannoh for what he called “his polarizing and political divisiveness.”
Sannoh and president Adama Barrow hailed from the same District Jimara. Both him and Barrow were Real Estate Agents prior to the change of leadership in the Gambia, back in December of 2016.
Given his friendship with Barrow; and the duos’ UDP affiliations, Sannoh was hired to be part of Barrow’s State House staff. He is being paid as a Barrow political surrogate. His job description at the State House is not clear—besides driving around town canvassing for support for the rookie president.
Dodou Sannoh is increasingly becoming a political beast. He is using his closeness to Barrow to go after his perceived political foes. He has allegedly got some senior security chiefs transferred in the aftermath of the Jimara Ward elections. This followed, a political violence between the supporters of the UDP and the opposition GDC, under the leadership of Mama Kandeh. Kandeh is also a native of Jimara.
Mr. Sannoh’s brother recently lost the Korro-Julakunda ward elections to his GDC opponent Ebrima Manneh. He ran under a UDP ticket. He lost. This never went down well with Dodou Sannoh.
That ward elections were marred by violence. Dodou Sannoh, Bulli Barrow, president’s Barrow’s brother and the District Chief of the area were said to have allegedly orchestrated the arrest of the GDC Councillor, supporters, and MP Alhagie Sowe of the GDC. Both Dodou Sannoh and Bulli Barrow were on the phone with the police—instructing them what to do, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The police Commissioner in charge of the region Famara Jallow was transferred in the aftermath of the Jimara political incident. He was replaced by OC Sankareh. Sankareh was the OC in charge of Mansakonko, prior to his transfer to Basse.
The case of the accused GDC supporters was assigned to magistrate Demba Senghore. The case suffered couple adjournments.
Seemingly concerned about the possibility of the prosecution losing the frivolous politically motivated case, Dodou Sannoh, allegedly engineered the transfer of Magistrate Sengore. A young magistrate in the person of Omar Jabang, a native of Kombo Pirang, was brought in to replace his colleague Senghore.
The Jimara case is taking a tribal dimension. Jimara is predominantly a Fullani settlement. OC Famara Jallow is a Fulani. He was replaced by a Mandinka officer Sankareh. Magistrate Demba Senghore is a Serre. He was replaced by a Mandinka magistrate Omar Jabang.
Dodou Sannoh needs to be cautioned before he will plunge Jimara into turmoil. He has no business in meddling into the work of the police and the judiciary.
For some reasons, the people of Jimara are not in love with Adama Barrow and the UDP. Mr. Barrow has ran on two different occasions under a UDP ticket for the Jimara MP seat, but he lost the election to Mama Kandeh.
Despite being a transitional president, the UDP backed candidate, also lost the Jimara MP seat to Alhagie Sowe of the GDC. Now, the likes of Dodou Sannoh, and president Barrrow’s family members think that they can use the powers of the incumbency to harass and subjugate their political opponents. The world is watching…
