The National People’s Party diaspora coordinator Maimuna Ceesay has went off on Ousainou Darboe, the leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), branding him as an ungrateful politician, and a town crier. She said now towards the elections, Darboe would continue crying day in and out throughout the electioneering campaign season because team NPP wouldn’t spare the old man.
Ms. Ceesay was speaking on Sunday at a meeting held at the State House in Banjul. She has branded Darboe as a political spent force, who hasn’t been appreciative Barrow’s move to free him from jail.
Darboe was serving time in prison prior to the change of government. He tried and sentenced for three years for organizing a protest march without a permit.
“He was never freed from jail. It was President Barrow, who exercised his executive authority to pardon Darboe. If it was not President Barrow, he would have been still in jail,” she remarked.
According to Maimuna Ceesay, while Darboe was working for The Gambian government, he was behaving as if he President Barrow was his rival couple. She said Barrow had tried everything possible to avoid parting company with the drama freak UDP leader, but without success.
Darboe had served as Foreign Minister and Vice President under Barrow’s rule. He was Gambia’s De Facto President in the early days of the transition. He was the one calling the shots on issues relating to appointments in the Foreign Service, Civil Service, parastatals and other government agencies.
“The President has done everything for our father Ousainou Darboe. He was competing with the President while working under him. He was like a rival couple to President Barrow. The President has tried to engage to mend peace with him but without success,” she added.
Ms. Ceesay has noted that Gambians do not owe anything to Ousainou Darboe, including the UDP. She said Gambians’ efforts to elect Barrow in 2016 had facilitated Darboe’s freedom from jail.
“Gambians do not owe Darboe anything. Even the UDP do not owe Darboe anything. Darboe has been practicing law for over 40 years. He has also led the UDP for over 22 years. As rightly stated by President Barrow, he is a good lawyer, but he couldn’t succeed in defeating Jammeh in past elections. I know that he is crying because of what we are saying. He would continue to cry now towards the elections. I do not know what would happened after the elections, but for now he is a crybaby,” she said.
Maimuna Ceesay has called on the NPP women to use their influence on canvass for votes for President Barrow. She has stressed the need for the NPP to protect its vote before the elections.
She has also called on them to vote massively for President Barrow on election day.
Regarding the issue of NPP t shirts, she has called on the NPP supporters to put on NPP t shirts to promote the party’s identity. She has urged them to emulate their new APRC friends, whom she said always wore their APRC t shirts during party events.
