There is more to the NPP female wing power struggle. Team Maimuna Ceesay Darboe have been waging an internal plot to replace Maimuna Baldeh, the party’s National Women’s mobilizer. They want the KMC NPP Women’s regional mobilizer Isatou Trawally to replace Mrs. Maimuna Baldeh. Mrs. Trawally is the wife of Musa Fatty. Musa Fatty is President’s cook at the State House. This is the man, who cooks for Barrow.
When their original plot to replace Mrs. Baldeh with Maimuna Ceesay failed, they decided to groom Isatou Trawally. It was President Barrow who foiled that plot. The President moved in and named Maimuna Ceesay as the NPP diaspora secretary. She was advised to concentrate on the diaspora and allow Maimuna Baldeh to run the NPP women’s national front.
Isatou Trawally has the backing of strong forces within the State House and outside the State House. She is said to be the favorite NPP national mobilizer candidate for some section of the former diasporan exiles, currently calling the shots at the President’s Office. Notably among them include Alkali Conteh, Siaka Jatta and Lamin Saidy.
This past weekend, Isatou Trawally, was adopted as a “mother” by the NPP supporters in Panchang, in the Central River Region. There was a boycott of the event, as some villagers refused to attend. They refused to be lured into the plot to undermine Maimuna Baldeh.
Meanwhile, women’s mobilizer Maimuna Baldeh remains in bubble. She is being fought by different forces within the party’s female wing.
The Maimuna Ceesay camp backing Isatou Trawally doesn’t recognize Maimuna Baldeh as the party’s legitimate national women’s mobilizer. Sources familiar with the story have cited tribalism as the main factor threatening NPP’s political future. Mrs. Baldeh is being treated as a stranger within the party, sources said.
Maimuna Baldeh came to the NPP, when it was newly formed. She was brought in by the likes of Dodou Sanno, and Lamin Cham to help steer the affairs of the women wing, trusted sources within the NPP told Freedom Newspaper.
President Barrow is yet to intervene to resolve the power struggle crisis in his party. The relationship between Maimuna Baldeh and team Maimuna Ceesay hasn’t been cordial.
“The party is at risk of dividing. We need a united party ahead of the elections. President Barrow should weigh in and fix this distraction,” said one party supporter.
