A Guinean man, who has been charged with rape and has tested positive for Coronavirus, is currently sharing cell with eight detainees at the Bundung police station, Freedom Newspaper can authoritatively report. The accused person, identified as one Alieu Barry, has been held on charges of defiling a minor. Barry tested positive for the Coronavirus four days ago. He was supposed to be quarantined outside the police station, but the police command hasn’t cooperated with Health officials despite repeated demands for the detainee to be moved out of the police station, our sources told us.
Police officers on duty, inmates, and complaints coming to the police station have been exposed to the COVID-19 positive Guinean detainee, sources further intimated.
According to sources, Health officials working with Gambia’s COVID-19 response team have made frantic efforts by asking the police to release the rape accused person for him to be quarantined but to no avail.
“One of our officers, working with the COVID-19 response team Saidybah, came to the station with some health officials on Wednesday. They made a request for the coronavirus positive detainee to be moved out of the station for health safety reasons, but the command hasn’t cooperated. They are not keen at deploying officers to escort the accused person, guard him at the quarantine site. For the past couple of days, the Corona infected accused person Alieu Barry, has been sharing cell with the eight detainees. Officers at the station have been exposed to the positive detainee,” sources told me.

“Alieu Barry has been charged with raping a juvenile. He hasn’t denied the charges, according to the cautionary and voluntary statements that have been obtained from him. He was tested for COVID-19 on Monday together with the other detainees, all the test results came fine for the other detainees, except Alieu Barry, his test result came positive. The test results came on Tuesday. He has been sharing cell with the other detainees, who have tested negative for COVID-19,” our trusted and competent sources told us.
“The COVID-19 response team have been coming to the station, demanding for the detainee to be quarantined, but without success. They were here on Wednesday and Thursday. The Bundung police station has been exposed to a Coronavirus positive detainee. This is what is happening,” our sources added.
According to reliable sources, the rape accused person Alieu Barry, has been under detention at the Budung police for the over a month. He is yet to be remanded in prison; sources told us.
For now, the Budung police station, has been exposed to a COVID-19 positive detainee. The station is yet to be fumigated.
Efforts to reach the police spokesman Superintendent Lamin Njie for comment proved futile. He could not be reached for comment at the time of going to press.
