The Inspector General of police Abdoulie Sanyang has effected major transfers within the force’s officers top brass, prompting speculations that he is trying to surround himself with his Jarra brothers within the command ahead of the December 4th Presidential elections, Freedom Newspaper can report. Insiders at the police headquarters are of the view that IGP Sanyang is allegedly up to no good and his recent move to surround himself with officers that he came from the same region of The Gambia, should not be treated as something normal. The police boss has been accused of practicing nepotism. His loyalty to the current status quo has also been questioned in some quarters.
The latest officer to have been transferred is Jawara Demba, the commander of the tourism security unit (TSU). Mr Demba has been moved to the Joint Operations Unit of the force. He has been replaced by a junior officer ASP Amadou Drammeh.
The police commissioner for Kanifing, Amadou Sabally, has been replaced by Omar Darboe. Sabally is currently sitting home. He is yet to be reassigned to any command unit within the force. His successor Omar Darboe had worked at different units within the force, including the Joint Operations unit, IEC, and the police intervention unit.
Buba Jassey, the Deputy police commissioner for Banjul has been moved to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).
Commissioner Kinteh has been moved to the North Bank Division (NBD). He replaced former Commissioner Sowe, who is now the Deputy Inspector General of police.
Commissioner Bandah has been moved to the Lower River Region (LRR). Bandah replaces Commissioner Kemeta Sambou.
The newly transferred officers are natives of Jarra. They hailed from the same region with IGP Sanyang, one insider told us.
“Our IGP should be closely watched. He is pretending to be an NPP supporter when he is a UDP supporter. He has surrounded himself with officers that he hailed from the same region. He is no longer hiding his nepotism. He is purging officers who were close to the late IGP Mamout Jobe. This is shady. There is more to the transfers, we will find out one day,” said an insider.
IGP Sanyang has denied being a UDP supporter or sympathizer. He was quoted to have reassured Amad Gitteh, a strong supporter of President Barrow’s National People’s Party (NPP) that he has no affiliation with the UDP. But his colleagues at the police HQS in Banjul are not buying his story.
“Any good observer or an analyst can discern the IGP’s dubious plans. We are here watching. Time will tell,” said another insider.
The police Superintendent Lamin Njie was contacted via WhatsAPP, but he declined our call. Efforts to reach him via a direct phone call also proved futile. Perhaps, he might be busy attending to official functions.
