The National Youth President for the National People’s Party (NPP) Kebba Madi Bojang has been questioned by the police and released after been accused of allegedly assaulting a police officer at the Jambur voter registration center. No charges have been proffered against Mr. Bojang. Bojang was processed by the Banjulnding police and released. The police’s hands are seemingly tight because Bojang is claiming to be a diplomat, who is immune from police arrest or prosecution, sources familiar with the story have intimated.

The assaulted police officer has been identified as one Baboucarr Mbye. Mbye was attacked and beaten by a mob led by Kebba Madi Bojang.

The incident happened this past Friday, at the Jambur voter registration center, where Kebba Madi Bojang, and the Jambur ward counselor Momodou Bojang, were having an argument with a UDP supporter.

The UDP supporter was heard telling Kebba Madi Bojang and co not to bring foreigners to be registered. An argument later ensued, the quarreling parties descended into the IEC registration center, which prompted officer Mbye’s intervention. Bojang and co were asked to leave the registration center because they were obstructing the voter registration process. Officer Mbye was aided by other seminarians to move Bojang and co from the registration center.

Few minutes later, Kebba Madi Bojang showed up at the registration center with a hostile mob. He reportedly forced his way into the registration center. The police officer couldn’t restraint him. He started yielding at the officer telling him “don’t come close to me, if you touch me, I will show you who I am.”

Kebba Madi Bojang was not a party agent. He forced himself into the registration center.

During his exchanges with the police officer, Kebba Madi Bojang hit the officer, his boys then grabbed the officer, dragged him to the ground, held him by his hands and legs, and carried him out of the registration center like a bag, sources said.

The matter was reported to the police command. Officers were sent to Jambur to investigate the assault incident.

Kebba Madi Bojang was invited to the Banjulnding police station, where he met Pateh Jallow, the police commissioner for the West Coast Region. A statement was obtained from Kebba Madi Bojang and the officer he assaulted. Bojang was never detained. He was released because the police said he had a diplomatic passport, according to sources.

Meanwhile, the Banjulnding police are investigating the matter.

Kebba Madi Bojang was contacted by phone, but he was not available for comment.

The police spokesman Superintendent Lamin Njie could not be reached for comment.
