A former nominated member of Parliament in Jammeh’s government has accused Majanko Samusa of allegedly orchestrating her arrest in the wake of the March 2006 failed Ndure Cham coup. Mrs. Diab made the disturbing allegation in a phone conversation with this reporter. We had the conversation prior to the change of government.
She said she was planning to set up a political party with the late Buba Baldeh, Lai Conteh and others when she got arrested. Conteh was also arrested. But Buba Baldeh was able to escape and later resettled in neighboring Senegal. Baldeh lived in Senegal until his unfortunate death.
According to Mrs. Diab, Mr. Samusa, had always pretended to be nice to her, when in actual fact, he (Samusa) was a wolves in a sheep’s clothing. Samusa, she went on, had always portrayed her (Diab) as someone, who is anti-establishment.
“He has always claimed that I am someone who insults a leader. I later found out that he was the one who reported me. He is a fake guy. The impression he exhibits doesn’t represents his true character,” she alleged.
Mrs. Diab was arrested and accused of being complicit in the Ndure Cham 2006 failed coup. She was charged with treason but was later released. She added that she was rearrested and accused treason, concealment of treason among other trumped charges. She alleged that her second arrest was orchestrated by her cousin Lally Diab.
She said she was tortured while under NIA custody. She sustained lacerations on her back because of the brutal torture she suffered.
Mrs. Diab was detained together with her late Uncle Mr. Riaf Diab. The late Diab was a heart patient, who had a bypass surgery when he was tortured by the NIA. He was also battling cancer at the time of his arrest and torture. He died shortly after been released from NIA custody, she said.
“I was stripped naked and mercilessly tortured by Jammeh’s guards. I was virtually unconscious. I cried and asked Musa Jammeh, alias Malia Mungu, to come to my aid. He later asked them to stop the beatings. While bring dragged through the stairs, soldiers put their fingers into my female genital,” she recounted.
According to Mrs. Diab, Musa Jammeh, was the one, who supervised her torture. She also said Musa Jammeh was in constant touch with the exiled dictator Yahya Jammeh. That she heard Musa Jammeh telling Jammeh that she (Mrs. Diab) was under their custody.
“Yahya Jammeh ordered for our arrest and torture. Musa Jammeh had two phones with him while at the NIA. I heard him telling the guards that if the other phone rings, they shouldn’t pick it up, that he should be called to attend to the phone when it rings. That was the phone he used to speak to Jammeh. When Jammeh asked about me, he told him that I was under their custody,” she said.
Mrs. Diab said she was threatened by the late Tumbul Tamba.
“Tumbul had threatened to remove my tooth with the hammer that he had at the time. He told me to brace up and behave like a man, because he was going to remove my teeth,” she told me.
Mrs. Diab also said MC Cham was also brutally tortured. She added that Lai Conteh suffered a broken hand as a result of the torture that was meted out to him by the jungullars.
She recalled the NIA investigators using tricks on her by telling her that her uncle Riaf Diab and MC told them that she was on the verge of setting up a political party. And the same investigators would tell Mr. Diab and Mr. Cham that Ramzia told them that they were the ones financing her upcoming new party.
Ramzia has also accused Momodou Hydara, a former NIA Deputy Director of being a torturer. She said Hydara had slapped detainees in her presence.
She also branded Harry Sambou, the former DG of the NIA as a “bastard.” She alleged that Mr. Sambou was trying to convince her to fabricate a statement against Lang Tombong Tamba, that Tamba was part of the 2006 failed coup, but she refused. She said she went berserk on Sambou and told him that she was not that type of person, who would be used to falsely frame people.
Mrs. Diab told us that she was going to write a book on Jammeh’s misrule. Her plans to resettle in the United States never materialize as planned. She lived in The Gambia until few days before Jammeh’s fall, when she crossed the border to resettle in neighboring Senegal. This was in the wake of Gambia’s post 2016 election impasse. Her life was in danger at the time. She told a UDP local platform that she had received a tipped off that Jammeh had assigned one of his jungullars to kill her.
Mr. Samusa and the people mentioned in the disturbing accusations could not be reached for comment at press time.
