A highly placed insider said he suspects that the GRA theft case was an insider job. The official, who wished not to be named said there is no way that thieves can break into the GRA Wellington building without been noticed by security officers on duty. “There are security officers on duty at that location. There are also CCTV Camera installed there. For anyone to get to the Deputy Director’s office, he must have access to the premises or is familiar with the premises. I want to believe that this was an inside job operation. It is similar to the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) fuel coupon theft case. GAF soldiers entered the building through back door. In this GRA case, our preliminary investigations had revealed that the alleged thief/thieves entered the building through the back. There is something that the DG of GRA Yankuba Darboe, hasn’t told you Mr. M’Bai, about five thousand fuel coupons were stolen during that break-in theft. The fuel coupons were kept in the safe. We are yet to establish that if money was left in the safe, but I can tell you that about 5000 fuel coupons were stolen,” said the top police insider.
The police insider said so far there is evidence to show that the fuel coupons have been used by the thief/thieves. He warns that if the coupons are used, the alleged thief/thieves would be caught.
“Our men are on the case. This was a case of fuel coupon theft, computer, TV set among other valuables stolen. If I was handling this case, I will have a talk with the Deputy GRA DG, and the guards on duty. The thief/thieves haven’t robbed the banks in that location, but had only targeted the DDG office, that speaks volume. For your information, there are so many irregularities taking place at Customs. Could you believe that over 5000 vehicles have been illegally smuggled into this country without their owners paying the necessary taxes that they were supposed to pay to the state? Follow the money. GRA is a complete mess,” said the insider.
GRA DG Yankuba Darboe has denied that the theft was an inside job.
