It was back in 2019, when the Banjul Mayor Rohey Mallick Lowe, called her in her office and gave her three thousand dalasis (D3,000) to acquire a Gambian passport. This was in preparation for a trip to Belgium. She was not a staffer of the BCC. She was also paid sixty-five thousand dalasis (D65,000) per diem allowance prior to their departure from Banjul for Belgium. Ms. Neneh Suwareh, widely known as Neneh Toubab, made the revelation during an interview with Freedom Radio Gambia’s Leral show.
Ms. Suwareh admitted that she was not entitled to be paid per diem, but says it was Mayor Lowe, who facilitated her trip to Belgium. That trip lasted for one week.
“I was not a staffer of the BCC when the Mayor gave me D3,000 dalasis to acquire passport to be part of her delegation to Belgium. I used to work at the BCC as a security and later revenue collector. But at the time of that trip, I had already quitted my job. I was issued a D65,000 dalasis per diem allowance cheque (check) by the Council’s Chief Executive Officer Mustapha Batchilly. The cheque was issued to me before we left for Belgium. I cashed it and use some part of the money as a pocket money. We were hosted in a free hotel, we were also feed, we were there for one week,” she said.
Neneh Toubab added that the purpose for that Belgium trip was to beg for some logistical support for the BCC. She said she wouldn’t mind repaying the money if asked by a future Commission of enquiry.
“I agree with you, it is wrong for a non-staff member of the BCC to be paid per diem allowance. I wouldn’t mind repaying the money if I am asked to do so,” she remarked.
