The former junta Vice Chairman Edward David Singhateh has been scheduled to appear before Gambia’s Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) today at 10:00 AM GMT. Singhateh’s pending testimony will attract viewers within and outside the country. This was the guy, named in the murder of the former Finance Minister Ousman Koro Ceesay. Ceesay was murdered in June of 1995. His remains were found in his burnt official car in the outskirt of Jambour. Ceesay was seeing off dictator Jammeh to the airport, where he was allegedly lured to the home of Yankuba Touray, a former junta council member and Local government Minister, and subsequently killed.

Singhateh’s testimony will help to bring closure in the murder case of Koro Ceesay, the murder of the about dozen army officers, who were accused of coup plot back in November of 1994, the killing of Sadibou Hydara, the former junta Interior Minister, among others, provided that he decides to make  confession in the aforementioned crimes he had been accused of.

It was back in 1996 that Singhateh was appointed Trade Minister by dictator Jammeh. The then junta had claimed at the material time to have won the controversial 1996 elections. He retired from the army to accept political appointment in Jammeh’s newly elected government. Isatou Njie Saidy was appointed Vice President.

While at the Trade Ministry, Singhateh began to feel being alienated by Jammeh. He immediately started losing grip of the country, he onetime headed as Vice Chairman.

Singhateh has also been accused of having hands in the strained relationship between the late Baba Kajali Jobe and Yahya Jammeh. As Trade Minister, he was working with the police headed by Landing 13 Badjie and Yahya Jammeh to have Jobe legally nailed on trumped embezzlement charges. Jobe was accused of embezzling rice belonging to  the Youth Development Enterprise (YDE) among others.

Singhateh was subsequently fired from Jammeh’s government during a cabinet reshuffle. He later enrolled at the University of The Gambia to study law. He is a lawyer by profession.

Singhateh’s mum is an Irish citizen. His late Dad is a Gambian, who hailed from the Basse area. He was born in the United Kingdom. His junior brother Peter Singhateh had also been implicated in the murder of Koro Ceesay.

Singhateh’s parents later resettled into The Gambia, where he and his siblings were raised. He grew up from a poor home. They were living in an incomplete house in the Fajaras.

Upon finishing High School, both Edward and his brother Peter Singhateh enrolled into the then Gambian National Army. They were commissioned as officers. Singhateh was among the main planners of the July 22nd 1994 military takeover, which toppled President Jawara’s thirty years rule.
