3 Died, 5 Hospitalized In Shipwreck Off Gunjur Coasts

Police spokesman Lamin Njie has confirmed today the death of 3 persons in a boat that capsized off Gunjur coasts. The tragic accident has also left 5 people hospitalized.
“We can confirm the incident of a boat capsized at sea in Gunjur WCR on Sunday 13th October 2019,” ASP Lamin Njie told this medium in response to an information request sent to him.
The Police news dispatch suggests that the sad turn of events happened on Sunday at around 09:00hrs when the Muslim brotherhood “Daira Nailu Huda” was shooting a video at sea. The members of the Muslim organisation are from Banyaka village and they ‘hired two boats along the beach of Gunjur’ to carrying their
“Distance into the sea one of the boats capsized resulting to the death of 3 individuals,” Police Spokesperson added while indicating that the boat was carrying 8 people.
ASP Lamin Njie further stated that the captain of the boat, Bakary Kah, is helping the police on their investigations.
Reacting to the sad news, environmental activist Mustapha Manneh, who also spoke to this medium, deplored the fact that boat owners are not respecting safety measures.
Manneh, who works as a consultancy works for Green Gambia, expressed shock about the shipwreck that has plunged the entire community into deep sadness.
“What I can tell you is that boat owners don’t provide life jackets for their clients. Government should take urgent action to ensure that safety jackets are used,” he added.
Similar sentiments were echoed by Gunjur Youth Movement leader Sulayman Bojang who called on boat owners to put the safety of commuters at the centre stage of their activities.
