There is an office outlet right opposite the St. Theresa’s Senior Secondary School. I was told that the office in question housed the Barrow Youth Movement (BYM). It is located on the second floor of the building. There is a conference room, and support staff offices inside the office. President Adama Barrow’s portrait is handing on the wall; flanked by The Gambian National Flag. The Gambian map is also on the wall—with writing inscription below the map titled: “The Barrow Youth Movement For National Development.”
The Barrow Youth Movement was set up months after the change of government in December of 2016. There are many BYM offices of such kind in the length and breadth of the country.
The financial source of BYM is yet to be established. The Movement is involved in sponsoring community development projects such as gardening, farming, digging boreholes for rural folks, and grassroots political activities.
Some BYM folks interviewed said all Barrow Youth Movement projects funding comes from the State House. President Barrow and team are behind the venture.
It is not clear if state resources are being funneled into the Movement, but sources said millions of dalasis have so far been invested in the BYM.
The BYM is said to be an organization operating in conjunction with the Barrow government. It prides itself in complementing government’s efforts to nation building.
The BYM serves as political bureaus for the rookie President. This is part of his covert ongoing preparation to set up his upcoming political party; should in the event the United Democratic Party decides not to embrace him post transition period as the party’s flag bearer.
The Independent Electoral Commission requires political parties or would be political parties to own political bureaus in all the administrative regions of The Gambia. The Barrow Youth Movement has not only fulfilled the IEC requirement, but it is also serving as a “backdoor channel” to extend so called developmental projects on behalf of the Presidency to rural and urban Gambian settlements.
