Are the PDOIS Parliamentarians doing disservice to their constituents and the country? How comes that the PDOIS MPS, with the exception of Swaibou Touray, have either deliberately missed out or abstained from casting their vote on such an important budgetary voting on Thursday? The PDOIS MPS have once again failed their constituents and the country. Pathetic!
Despite their noise and opposition to the tabled appropriation supplementary bill, the PDOIS MPS chickened out, when they were needed most to decide on this important bill. This followed, repeated arguments by the PDOIS MPS, before the House floor about the flawed bill and its unconstitutionality. Both Halifa Sallah and Ousman Sillah have abstained from voting. Sedia Jatta was nowhere to be seen around the House. He was indisposed at the time of voting. Suwaibou Touray voted in support of the bill.
The PDOIS’s parliamentary mantra largely centered around “conscience and national interest” when deciding issues of national matters before the House, but they never lived up to their proclaimed parliamentary mantra on Thursday. They chose to turn their back at their constituents. Silence on the face of injustice amounts to enabling evil practices.
Thursday was an important day in the annals of Gambia’s new-Found Democracy. This was the day; The Gambian Executive branch of government tested our Legislative branch of government with that phony supplementary budget. Sadly, Halifa, Sedia, Ousman, and Swaibou have woefully failed the test. Their failure to join the patriotic and principled MPS to reject Mamburay’s fake bill speaks volume.
The PDOIS MPS appears to be the “Blue Dog Democrats” of the US Democratic Party. No one should count on them on critical issues of national concern. Them invoking their constitutional powers to abstain from voting, shows their lack of consistency and wherewithal to vote against the Executive.
It is hypocritical for the PDOIS MPS to oppose the tabled bill last week, and turn around to invoke the abstain card from not voting. This is a message to Gambians that: these folks cannot be relied upon in times of need. They have demonstrated their lack of interest in ending fiscal waste and corruption.
Halifa Sallah, Sedia, and Ousman are fine gentlemen. Swaibou too is a good man. But their failure to take a position on this important bill is despicable. Your constituents deserve better.
This is the time, in which we can differentiate the brave and the coward. Abstaining was a poor judgment on the part of the PDOIS leadership in Parliament. Not showing up was also a bad decision. Casting a vote in favor of the fake bill, will also hunt the party for years to come.
The basis of their refusal to serve in Barrow’s cabinet was to help keep the government honest in Parliament. Now that you are in Parliament, you are missing out in major critical national matters. Sad day Gambia.
