The Gambian Government is losing on a daily basis over D10 million dalasis, as a result of the Social Security, Housing and Finance Corporation staffers sit down strike action, the Freedom Newspaper can reveal. The SSHFC strike action has been going on for the past two weeks. No resolution has been reached yet to settle the workers dispute with their Managing Director Muhammed Manjang. Manjang has been accused by the staff of allegedly claiming fictitious per diem allowances, abuse of the staff entertainment budget, nepotism among others. He has denied the charges.
A SSHFC staffer told this medium that the sit-down strike action is virtually crippling the operations of the Corporation. The insider said workers have ceased working for the past two weeks.
“Everything is dead in this office. There is no work taking place here. The Government is losing over D10 million dalasis per day because of the strike action. It is sad that the Government is siding with one individual in the person of Muhammed Manjang just to deral the work of the SSHFC. One badly tainted man for that matter,” the insider remarked.
President Adama Barrow constituted a committee to investigate the SSHFC staffers dispute with MD Manjang. Part of the committee’s recommendation was for the suspended MD Manjang to be reinstated and Momodou Camara, the SSHFC staff rep be fired. Camara has since been removed.
It appears that Adama Barrow has no clue as to how to resolve the staffers dispute with MD Manjang. Armed police intervention unit officers have been deployed to the SSHFC Headquarters in Banjul to protect the building.
